A Brief History of Egyptian Cotton

Ironically, though Egypt’s Nile River Valley has provided optimum growing conditions for the luxurious material we know as Egyptian cotton since before the time of Moses, this top-quality fiber wasn’t initially available in ancient Egypt! Instead of cotton, ancient Egyptians wore garments made of linen—derived from flax plants—and silk.

However, as time passed the long fibers, also known as staples, of cotton plants in Egypt were used for fine linens and bedding and since then, have been used for hundreds of years.

These staples are extra long, ranging in length from 1 ½ to 2 ¼ inches, an extra long length that allows them to be spun into very fine, soft, lustrous yarns that are then woven into extraordinarily strong and smooth cotton fabric.

Now recognized as the most luxurious cotton in the world, Egyptian cotton is still cultivated mainly in the Nile River Valley in Egypt. Genuine Egyptian cotton comes only from Egypt. In 2001, Egyptian cotton was trademarked using a distinctive logo because cotton grown in other parts of the world was being sold as Egyptian. The logo features a white cotton plant inside a dark triangle that symbolizes an Egyptian pyramid.

What are the benefits of using Egyptian cotton bed linen? Because it is a 100% natural fiber, Egyptian cotton breathes easily, which makes it a bon for people with dry or sensitive skin conditions. Egyptian cotton sheets are lovely and cool to the touch, making them especially for hot, sticky summer nights. At thread counts above 600, Egyptian cotton’s body-insulating properties make it perfect for winter bedding as well.

Egyptian cotton’s ability to absorb liquid allows it soak in dies that give the final product very vibrant color that lasts longer than products made of lesser-quality cotton and make it perfect for products where absorbency is needed such as bath towels and bathrobes which are also very soft.

Egyptian cotton is used to make a variety of high quality, durable products including sheet sets and duvet covers. If you are looking to add a little luxury to your cotton products, Egyptian cotton is the fabric you should choose!
