Over 80% of the down bedding products sold in the US are made in China. China is the world’s largest exporter of down and feather. A large goose and duck population is interwoven with China’s enormous agricultural society. Many people, not just farmers, own farm animals and depend on them for food and money.

Down and feathers come primarily from this conglomerate of small farm and home sources, then is amassed by down and feather traders who supply the manufacturers. The manufacturers clean and sort the down / feathers to use in down comforters and bedding.

Because there is a wide range of down and feather mixtures and qualities, Williams Loft has a strict product testing procedure in place. Product samples are pulled and tested before production by the International Down and Father Bureau (IDFL). Once they pass inspection, production begins. After production, and IDFL agent goes to the factory and pulls a random sample from among the product. Shipment only occurs once the product has passed this final inspection.

As a matter of routine, most Chinese down manufacturers don’t produce the promised quality standard. Only when 3rd party testing procedures are in place will they comply. Because testing is expensive, most US importers do not do it, and have no way of guaranteeing the specifications as labeled on their products.

If you are shopping for a down comforter, and want the very best, be sure to check the package labeling or website to see if the product has been tested by a third party. If the down bedding has not been tested, then it most likely does not meet specifications, especially if the price is too good to be true.

Canada is the second largest producer of down and feather. The Down Association of Canada is a non-profit organization with a mandate to educate the public about down and feather products. Many Canadian companies, including Daniadown, test their products and are Downmark certified. The US has no similar certifying agency.
