How to Wash Your Pillows

clean pillowsIt might not be something you think of as often as you wash your sheets and mattress protector, but keeping your pillows clean is an important step towards reducing allergens and having a comfortable sleep experience. Each type of pillow is made to be treated differently, so it is important to read and follow the manufacturer's directions when cleaning your bedding. Here are some easy tips to get you started washing your pillows:

  • Experts recommend washing your pillows at least twice a year and washing pillow protector cases every month when you wash comforters and blankets.
  • For down and down alternative pillows that are machine washable, try to wash two at once to keep the washing machine in balance.
  • Using a liquid soap will help reduce soap residue left behind on your pillow during the washing cycle.
  • Run pillows through two rinse cycles to be sure all the soap has been rinsed out before drying.
  • Adding laundry scents such as lavender instead of fabric softener can give you an aromatherapy experience for extra relaxation.

To dry your pillows, again, be sure to follow the directions on the label. Here are some things to keep in mind when you dry out your freshly laundered pillows.

  • Make sure to try all your pillows completely. Excess moisture can lead to mold growth which would increase allergens and may lead to illness.
  • Use a low heat setting on synthetic fabrics or down alternative pillows.
  • To encourage fluffy softness, toss in socks or tennis balls during the drying cycle to prevent filling from clumping together as it dries.
  • Add fabric softener sheets with a few drops of essential oil for to add a bit of aromatherapy to your night time rest.

Some pillows, such as memory foam or latex pillows, are not safe for machine washing. These pillows are best covered with a washable pillow protector that can be removed and thrown into the wash every few weeks. These pillows last a long time, resist allergens and can simply be replaced when needed.

Don't forget where you rest your head when you clean your bed! Making sure to keep your pillows as you clean twice a year can ensure you have a great night of restful sleep for years to come.
