Is a Silk Comforter Green?
Many products in today’s marketplace are labeled natural, green, or eco friendly to make you think they are good for the environment. But in many cases there is no justification for the claim.
Our world is changing. We need to be more aware of how our consumer choices impact the world, for our own sake, but much more so for those who come along after us. The message is all over the news; global climate change is real, it’s here to stay, and it’s getting worse. Most consumers “get” this concept. They are sensitive to the issue and want to do what is right, but it’s hard to know what products are better for our environment based on the word of the manufacturer and marketers.
To my knowledge, silk comforters are green for the following reasons:
- They are made of natural fibers from silk worms
- Silk is a renewable resource, capable of being produced at a rate equal to consumption
- Silk is more green than other bedding choices like nylon and acrylic which are derived from non-renewable fossil fuels
- Silk is biodegradable. It readily decomposes and renews soil.
