Sleeping Position and Proper Spinal Alignment

Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? Whatever sleeping position you are in, you want to have proper spinal alignment. The below images show what proper spinal alignment looks like.

Just Right – The right mattress for you will offer conforming support and even weight distribution to keep your spine naturally aligned in a fully relaxed position.

Sleeping Position & Proper Spinal Alignment

Too Soft – While a soft bed may feel good at first, inadequate support of your lower back (where your body weight is concentrated) can cause pain and stiffness.

Sleeping Position & Proper Spinal Alignment

Too Firm – A hard sleep surface provides uneven support and causes uncomfortable high pressure areas that cause you to toss and turn during the night.

Sleeping Postion & Proper Spinal Alignment

When buying a mattress, it’s important to take your sleeping position into consideration. For example, a side sleeper may need a plusher mattress to conform to the shape of their hips and shoulders, while a person who sleeps on their back usually will want a firmer mattress to help align their spine. Body shape and pillow type are other factors you may consider. When you find the right mattress, you will have proper spinal alignment and feel comfortable all night long.

Every day our mattress experts help customers find the right mattress, whether it’s soft, medium, firm, memory foam, or latex mattresses. We can talk with you about your sleeping position, body type, pillow type, and firmness preference.  Often we are able to save our customers hours of shopping and online research with a simple, five minute phone conversation; and we’ll be happy to talk with you!

I have arthritis in my lower back which causes pain. I've tried a sleep number and it did help but too expensive so returned. Considering re-visiting but a lower end model.

Currently I am on a plush probably too soft Sterns and Foster that just arrive Saturday. I think it is not good for my back and have 100 days to return.

I sleep about 1/2 and 1/2 from back to side.

I believe you answered your own question, you found a mattress that worked for you and you sent it back. I would consider the same mattress you had. Yes maybe the lower end model may work your you. Remember there are a lot of great mattresses but that does mean every mattress will fit you needs. I would suggest revisiting your first choice.

I have a select comfort bed. It is the most amazing bed I have ever slept on and you can adjust it to make it possible to sleep at the optimal position for spinal alignment. Simply an amazing sleep experience.
