Feather and Down Bedding is Safe from Avian Flu!

You may have heard of the Avian Flu Pandemic and wondered if it affects your down bedding. Well rest assured that your down and feather bedding, comforters, pillows, blankets, feather beds, and all down bedding are safe from this nasty virus.
 
The Avian Flu Virus is a class of the influenza virus. A manufacturer’s washing, sterilizing, and drying procedures are more than enough to destroy a virus. First down is washed with a detergent to remove all dust, dirt, and organic matter. Then it is steamed at 120-130 Celsius for 30 minutes. The Avian Flu virus can survive only 2-3 minutes at 56 Celsius. Therefore, the washing and steaming process for down and feathers kills the Avian Alu Virus.
 
Only a tiny fraction of the world’s poultry has ever been affected by Avian Flu. But even if it were present in raw (unwashed, unprocessed) down, it would be destroyed at the processing plant.
 
The AVIAN FLU VIRUS CANNOT SURVIVE the sterilization process used to clean down and feathers. Feather and down bedding poses NO HEALTH RISK.
 
Companies processing down for use in the US are required to have a sterilization permit.  Government authorized inspectors do an on-site inspection of the down processing plant to ensure down and feathers are sanitized correctly before issuing the permit. All down products that have STERILIZED on the US law tag label have met government requirements. They are safe to use in your home.
 
Countless studies have been done on Avian Flu; none of them prove or even indicate concern about the transmission of Avian Flu from down and feathers. US government officials and other Avian flu experts are satisfied that down and feather products, when properly sterilized, are safe for consumers.

Can Feather and Down Bedding Products be Tested?

Yes, 2 tests are regularly performed that assure proper sterilizations procedures have been followed:
  1. Oxygen Number: a test that determines the amount of foreign organic matter on the surface of the down and feathers. To qualify as “clean” the oxygen number must be less than 10.
  2. Turbidity: a test that determines the amount of dust in feather and down products. Clean products must have turbidity greater than 300 mm.
