Hypoallergenic Down Comforters Prevent Allergy Symptoms

How is down washed and prepared for use in down comforters?

First, raw down and feather material is taken to a down processing plant. Here it is washed at high temperatures to remove all impurities. During the drying process down and feathers are sterilized.

Every down processing plant must receive a sterilization permit if its product is for use in bedding. In the US, permits are usually issued by the State of Pennsylvania. This permit shows that the down processing plant follows proper quality assurance procedures.

Finished down products must meet minimum requirements for cleanliness as follows:
  1. Oxygen Number: a test that determines the amount of foreign organic matter on the surface of the down and feathers. To qualify as “clean” the oxygen number must be less than 10.
  2. Turbidity: a test that determines the amount of dust in feather and down products. Clean products must have turbidity greater than 300 mm.

Hypoallergenic

The generally accepted industry standards for claims of hypoallergenic or Super-Clean, on packaging or advertising of down and feather products is as follows:
  1. Oxygen number must be 4.8 or less.
  2. Turbidity must be 500 mm or greater.
Hypoallergenic down is super clean. It provides relief of allergy symptoms, and helps prevent allergic reactions by removing the cause: dust and allergens trapped inside the down.  Washing your down comforter once or twice per year and using a duvet cover, will help maintain your down comforters super clean status for a long time.
