Saving Energy with Quality Bedding

Would you like to save over 10% a year on your heating bills and help save the environment without freezing your buns off?

Well you can cut the heat back at night while you sleep if you have a warm bed. Goose down is the best insulating material in the world and makes light, comfortable, and warm bedding. Armed with a goose down comforter, you will sleep like a baby, stay warm, and save money.

Memory foam mattresses are also a good way to save energy and stay warm during the winter months. They do not get as cold as traditional innerspring beds.

Set Your Thermostat Back

You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower while you're asleep or away from home. By turning your thermostat back 10°–15° for 8 hours, you can save about 5%–15% a year on your heating bill - 1% savings per degree when the setback period is eight hours long.

Savings from turning down your heater is greater for buildings in milder climates than for those in more severe climates.

In the summer, you can follow the same strategy with central air conditioning.  Keep your house warmer when you are away and lower the thermostat to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling.

A common misconception says that it is actually more expensive for a heater to reheat a space, than to keep it warm. This misconception has been dispelled by years of research and numerous studies. Savings are realized for several hours from the time your house stabilizes at the lower temperature until heat is needed again. So the longer you keep your thermostat down, the more you save.

Thermostat Location Affects Reading

The location of your thermostat should be away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, skylights, and windows. This usually means it will be in an interior part of the house.

The temperature at your thermostat may differ by 3-5 degrees from other parts of the house. This is normal. A bedroom with exterior walls and windows will probably be a few degrees cooler than the reading on the thermostat.

Selecting a Down Comforter Weight is Subjective

Different manufacturers offer different recommendations based on temperature or season, but ultimately the decision is a subjective, personal one. You have to pick the down comforter that “feels right” to you. When selecting a goose down comforter, remember the many variables involved.
  1. Everybody’s perception of cold and heat is different. Some people feel comfortable at 60°F with only a thin sheet for covering and some people need a winter weight down comforter to keep their teeth from chattering.
  2. The thermostat in your home may not give a true reading of your bedroom temperature. It may be 3-5 degrees off.
  3. The warmth of a comforter depends on its filling weight. Higher filling weights are warmer.
  4. The percentage of down versus feathers will affect a comforter’s warmth. A higher % of down with less feathers makes a warmer comforter.
