Princess-and-the-Pea-Super-Duper-Build-Up Beds (PPSDBUB) Story
You may know the fairy tale about the Prince who placed a pea under 20 mattresses and 20 Eiderdown Beds to test the sensitivity of his Princess to be.
She passed the test in the morning by complaining, “I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!”
Is More More?
It is part of our consumer-oriented tendency to be always on the prowl for a better deal, something bigger, better, and faster. And that’s why we are susceptible to sly marketers.
Sellers know that consumers often pick the widget with the longest list of features for the best price, without asking whether those features are beneficial, or even necessary.
Mattress makers and retailers are always aware, when producing their next mattress that it has to have some cool and unique features. They understand that a simple bed, although superior in quality, may not be able to stand out amongst the crowd.
The Princess-and-the-Pea-Super-Duper-Build-Up Bed is one way to stand out.

Why the PPSDBUB’s More is Less
From top to bottom the PPSDBUB includes:
1. A layer of base foam
2. A layer of pocket coils
3. A layer of some type of non-stretch fabric barrier
4. A layer of cotton batting
5. A layer of memory foam
6. A layer of wool
7. Another layer of some type of non-stretch fabric barrier
8. A layer of 95% down feathers and 5% down
9. A layer of polyester fiber batting
10. A non-stretch polyester quilting fabric cover
The memory foam and pocket coils are great pressure relieving materials, but they are buried under multiple layers that make them ineffectual.
Beds like this sell for $2,000 - $4,000. The price may be justified when you consider how much work it takes to get all that stuff in there. But the added layers and expense do not add comfort or performance.
PPSDBU beds sell, though. The assumption is that if the expert mattress makers design the bed in this elaborate fashion, then each layer must perform some specific function in making the customer more comfortable.
A Layer for Each Function, and a Function for Each Layer
Foam beds have many outstanding qualities, the most important of which is their ability to reduce pressure points.
Simple 2 layer foam beds with a 4-way stretch cover can perform superbly. The top memory foam layer functions to contour the body and apply a uniform counter pressure at all points of contact. The base layer of foam mirrors the function of the top layer, giving added support.Foam beds with more than 2 layers have the potential to give a more plush experience. With layers of increasing firmness from top to bottom, several layers work in tandem, providing a softer top layer with deep support.
